One way to calculate surface area is to draw a net. The net for this object would look like this:
As you can see, we have a bunch of rectangles. The formula for area of a rectangle is lxw (length times width).
a=lxw
=1x5
=5cm2 (5 squared centimeters)
Back:
a=lxw
=4x5
=20cm2
Bottom:
a=lxw
=2x5
=10cm2
Top 2:
a= lxw
=1x5
=5cm2
Front 2:
a=lxw
=2x5
=10cm2
Top 2:
a=lxw
=1x5
5cm2
Front 1:
a=lxw
=2x5
10cm2
Side 1: (We can just count the squares)
6cm2
Side 2:
6cm2
Total surface area is the sum of the area of all the surfaces.
TSA= 2(5)+3(10)+2(6)+20
=10+30+12+20
=72cm2
The total surface area of the object is 72cm2 (72 squared centimeters).

Well...going over this I realized that I have drawn the net wrong. I'm working on it right now it will be fixed soon :)
ReplyDeleteAll fixed :) ...I hope
ReplyDeleteGood job laura! Your explanations were really good & both of your pictures are very clear to understand. Really nice job with the net!
ReplyDeletethanks :D
