Sharmaine's Scribe Post for October 5, 2010

Today in math class, we continued on with surface area. we were assigned to do a question and make a scribe on it

question 6:

A) If you build the rectangular solids and slide them together as shown, what is the area of the overlap? Assume the dots are 1 cm apart.
Answer:
overlap means the part that's being covered up or where it connects.
The longer rectangular prism has only one face that is going to be connected to the other rectangular prism. This side face has a height of 4 cm and a width of 3 cm.
the area of overlap is 12cm squared.

A= H x W
A = 4cm x 3cm
A = 12cm squared

B) What is the surface area when the solids are together?

formula:
2(6)(6) + 2 ( 8)(3) + 2(3)(3) + 2(8)(4) + 2(2)(3)
2(36) + 2(24) + (2(9) + 2(32) + 2(6)
72 + 48 + 18 + 64 + 12 =
TSA= 214cm squared

To calulate the surface area for the top, I cut the shape into to rectangle and found the surface area of two rectangles
2(4)(6) + 2(2)(3)

For the front view,I just caluated surface area of the front face and mulitplied it by 2
2(6)(6)
To calulate the suface of the top view, I cut the shape into to rectagles and found the suface area of them both.
2(3)(6) + 2(3)(8)

PLEASE COMMENT AND CORRECT ME IF I HAD ANY MISTAKES :)
